Metas journey to Threads
I joined Facebook as a software engineer in 2016, before Trump’s election, before Cambridge Analytica. It was, without a doubt, the best company to work for in the valley at that time. There was no negative press towards it; people loved the platform. Instagram was in its infancy, and Facebook was at its peak. The company seemed infallible.
However, in a few years, the tide changed, and negative press surrounded it. Social media became a scapegoat. It was blamed for everything wrong in the world.
Despite this, the company kept its head down. It remained committed to its mission of connecting the world. Facebook faced many existential threats throughout its lifetime. It had to learn how to be mobile-first, how to generate revenue through ads when nobody believed it was possible. It had to outpace relentless competition from some of the biggest companies (remember Google Circles?). It built and launched Stories in record time to counter the threat from Snapchat, and it developed Reels to regain ground in the short video battle. The company consistently delivered and survived.
Then, it decided to change the name of the company and place a bold bet on a new computing platform – Virtual Reality, calling it the future. Many mocked and questioned the wisdom behind that decision, only to witness the biggest company in the world follow suit, validating Meta’s bet.
This place still fascinates me, constantly delivering remarkable products, launches executed to perfection. Here’s to Meta, and here’s to Threads! a company I’ll forever be grateful to be working at.
Congratulations to the team on todays successful launch of Threads, a new social platform. I’m excited to see how it evolves.
